It is a science that is generally used for criminal investigation, as governed by the legal standards of admissible evidence and criminal procedure. It originated with the study of medical practitioners in the army who started collecting information about cause and manner of death, till a French army surgeon studied the effects of violent death on the internal organs. Writings on the topic began in the late 18th century which includes A Treatise on Forensic Medicine. It involves analyzing of crime scenes so as to collect the evidences, collection of fingerprints and body fluids, record observations and findings. All the collected sample is then send to the laboratory for test. There chemical, biological and microscopic tests are performed so that links can be established between the suspect and the criminal activity. Such technicians are known as Forensic scientists. Dr.Hari Singh Gaur university:

It is also known as Sagar University and is a Central University. It was established by Dr. Hari Singh Gaur on 18th July 1946. He was a great Patriot, Philanthropist, Educationist and a Social Reformer. The university was rechristened as Dr. Hari Singh Gaur Vishwavidyalaya in February 1982 by State Legislature. It has 36 teaching departments and a number of affiliated colleges running under it all over M.P. The Jawaharlal Lal Nehru library of the university has about 4,00,000 books in it. The university provides PG diploma in Criminology and police administration.

University of Madras:

It is public state university located in Chennai and was established in 1857.It is collegiate research university. The NAAC has conferred five star accreditation to it. It has also been given the status of “University with Potential for Excellence” by UGC. It has 68 departments under 18 schools. The Centre for Cyber Forensics and Information Security imparts a post graduate (PG) degree in Cyber Forensics and Information Security.

Government Institute of Forensic science:

it was established on 17th August 2009 and is funded by Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra. The institute provides an under-graduate and a post-graduate degree and also a one year PG diploma in the subject in various disciplines such as Forensic Physics, Chemistry, biology, Psychology, Digital and Cyber Forensics and Law.

Osmania University:

it is a public state university located in Hyderabad and was founded in the year 1918 by chief architect of Mahbub Ali Khan Nawab Sarwar Jung and was established and named after the 17th and the last Nizam of Hyderabad, Nawab Mir Osman Ali Khan. Among all the universities it only has Urdu as the medium of instruction. It has wide number of courses running, and also imparts degree in forensics. The Research going in the university are wide ranging, inter-disciplinary and of high order. Many of the departments receive grant from UGC and other funding agencies. Many departments also have national and international collaborations.

Dr Bhim Rao Ambedkar University:

it is located in historical city Agra. It is a state university and was established in the year 1927. It is the oldest university. It has UGC affiliation. Currently the vice-chancellor Mr. Arvind Dixit has drawn 12 plans to reform the varsity and ensure the universities position among the top 100 institutions of the country. Various colleges affiliated to it offer graduate and post-graduate courses in the subject.

Lok Nayak Jayprakash Narayan National Institute of Criminology And Forensic Science(LNJN NICFS), Delhi:

It was established in January 1972 for teaching, training, and consultancy in the field of the said subject so as to meet the requirements of Criminal Justice and Administration of the country. It functions under the ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India. UGC earlier had set up a committee of experts so as to take steps and bring the subject in the general stream of education. Since 1972 the institute has made significant contributions in training and research in these two subjects. The institute imparts postgraduate courses in above two courses. It is affiliated to Guru Gobind Singh Indraprastha University, New Delhi.

Gujarat University:

it is situated in Ahmedabad, Gujarat and is a state university. It has been accredited B++ by NAAC. It is an affiliating university at the under-graduate level and teaching at the post-graduate level. It imparts a post-graduate degree in the above subject. Besides it has many other subjects also in which it provides post-graduate, under-graduate, diploma and certificate courses. It also offers short term courses in subjects related to India and also for NRI’s and other foreign students.

Amity Institute:

It a private research university. It has around 10 campus that are located in India and eight international centers located in Abu Dhabi, Dubai, London, China, Mauritius, Romania, Singapore, and South Africa. It was formed by Mr.Ashok Chauhan the founder of Ritn and Balved Education Foundation. It offers an under-graduate degree in the said subject at the Noida campus and a honors degree in the same in Noida, Gurgaon, and Dubai campus. Doctoral degree is also there which is full time and part time both. It is one of the India’s leading Research and Innovated University.

Bundelkhand University:

it is a public state university located in Jhansi, Uttar Pradesh. It was founded in the year 1975. It is a member of Association of Indian Universities (AIU), International Association of Universities (IAU) AND Association of Common Wealth Universities. It comprises of 26 institutes of higher learning and 104 study programs ranging from graduate, post-graduate, M.Phil. and doctorate. It offers graduate and post-graduate degree in the subject. It receives huge grants for the projects sanctioned for the various departments. The National Assessment and the Accreditation Council (NAAC) graded it as B++. It organizes various national and international conferences and seminars in different disciplines every year.

Punjab University:

it is located in Chandigarh and was established in 1882.It has been accredited with a CGPA of 3.35 on a four point scale at A grade. It is the first university established in India and 38th in Asia. It has 78 teaching and research departments and 15 centers/chairs for teaching and research at the main campus located at Chandigarh. The Institute of Forensic Science and Criminology was incepted by the university in 2009-2010. It provides a post graduate in the subject.

The universities are running the course with the aid of government so as to make the coming generation versatile and resourceful. Some of the above described institutes also help the regional police department in the investigation of crime related to mobile, fingerprinting, road accidents etc. The vision of such institutes is to produce human resources who are competent enough to serve the State and Central Law enforcement agencies.
